Serving 24 yrs in the US Submarine Force, he held postions as Machinery Division Office, Ships Engineer, Executive Office and finally the building Commanding Officer of the new construction ship USS Columbus (SSN762). Model railroading has been in his life starting at 1 yr. The family purchased a Lionel set, which his Dad "owned" until he was old enough to set it up and run it by himself. Shifting from Lionel to HO gauge the layout was a 5' by 9' plywood board set up during the holidays. Family and Navy career hampered modeling time until a tour in Saratoga Springs, NY where he met Robert Hamm. Modeling the UP and SP in the Tehachapi Loop area was abandoned once the Narrow Gauge bug bit in HO. Carl joined the NMRA in 1978.
Fast forward to today, having modeled, for a period of time, the D&RGW in On3 and moving into a modest home in FL (no basement) the shift back to HOn3 occurred. Interest narrowed to the Rio Grande Southern (RGS) First Division circa 1938-1940. In a 12' by 12' room he is modeling scenes from Ridgway to Lizard Head, CO. He has visited and studied the area every few years.
Carl joined the NMRA National Contest staff at the Atlanta Convention and has been involved in National Contest continuously since. In 2014 he was appointed the Contest Chairman for the Sunshine Region. He was a member of the 2017 Orlando National Convention Staff.
Carl is well along toward completing the requirements to become a Master Model Railroader.
